Thank you, Anne. I'm very sad about what's happening in Churchill as well. I, too, fear that Ladoon will be made out to be a "hero" when there are still bears living on his land as others struggle to survive. However, he is by no means a hero and his actions are unjustifiable (in my opinion). Have you seen my most recent post this? Here's the article I wrote following my journey to Churchill this past Novemeber 2010: http://mytraveltales.com/2010/11/15/who%E2%80%99s-protecting-the-polar-bears/ Would love your thoughts on that as well!

Thank you again for your thoughtful comment. Hopefully, by coming together and raising awareness, we can make a difference.

What an excellent piece of writing. I really appreciate you trying to expose the truth concerning Ladoon and the poor dogs in his care. I've been living in Churchill for the past few summers, and cannot describe to you the frustration I have with this man and what he's doing to his animals, and the fact that more and more tourists are continuing to support him, and donate to his "charity". On another depressing note, a documentary is about to be premiered at the TIFF about Ladoon:

Fantastic pictures - I must have been in Churchill around the same time as you were.
I share the same misgivings that you have about the tours. The operator we had was fantastic, both the guides and the buggy driver were incredibly responsible - firmly but politely enforcing rules about food and noise and also declining to chase bears despite being encouraged to do so by some of our less sensitive fellow passengers.
It would have been great not to have been on a bus full of people but then I would not have been happy to have been encroaching in the ways that are shown in some of your pictures. I did see one incident, which made it to the newspapers in uk, of an idiot leaning out of the drivers window on a tundra buggy wearing a black hood over his face. I think he was probably trying to look more like a seal. The bear we saw did stand to have a good look at him but no more. He must have repeated the act though, because the pictures in the paper showed one bear investigating him really closely. I think that was a private hire and the guy was apparantly a "film-maker" - I may have read the situation wrong but I wasn't particularly impressed.
Anyway - it was the trip of a lifetime for us, a really great place and fantastic to see the bears for real. I hope the photos we took, and have shown to friends and family, help in a small way to make a few people more aware of how special they really are and that we did not have too much of a negative impact on their lives.
